PLAN CEIBAL
Digital Library
Having one laptop per child, one server per school and internet accessible to learners, I started thinking ways of exploiting this network. Having little or no access to Libraries in Uruguay, a light government policy to nurture schools with books and an urgent need to improve reading and writing levels in learners, the first development was CEIBAL´s Digital Library.
With this tool available, every family could access not only +2000 books and studying material, but also, a set of multimedia resources that could benefit language development (videos, songs, image books and audio books). Furthermore we worked intensively with IT to make reading in an XO or a Tablet a gratifying experience by empowering it´s e-reader for Gnome and Sugar. At the same time, we used servers and the XO technology to make the library available with or without internet so it could reach every home in any point of the country.
We took the joy of reading to the streets and spread the word of the relevance of home reading to every corner of the country inspiring a National Media campaign. Today the Library is an icon of how CEIBAL´s technology can serve social and educational equity and is a platform used to foster reading by other Organizations (I invite you to ready with me.)
