Special Projects
Leading this unit for CEIBAL involved the recognition and the expectation of developing a hotbed of innovation within the Plan. The objective was to capitalize, through specific educational projects, the technological opportunities offered by the Plan. The initiatives should bring to the users CEIBAL´s "educational vision" of innovation for social and educational equity.
In this framework, one strategy was the development of special video games to capitalize CEIBAL´s national reach, while innovating in how to engage learners on an educational proposal. The way the Tournaments with XO (Math + Reasoning) were presented to the public and the experiential learning experience offered, received an outstanding response from users. +100.000 downloads in 30 days. This reaction was a clear statement that entertainment, education and cross media communication combination could raise any prediction on what to expect from learners engagement in an educative challenge.
We wanted to change the conversation, break the paradigm that: educational means boring, a video game does not belong in schools, playing is not real learning, education is what happens inside the classroom, better learn alone and public education can be the good news on the news. We trusted learners as agents of cultural change among these issues, and at the end of the Tournaments we were getting front cover of the main newspapers and television time.
Launching an LMS Platform (Learning Management System) nationwide was a different challenge. Walking the path of how teacher´s organize, created and share their work was not easy task. CREA Platform was the first time CEIBAL was getting inside teachers ¨way of doing¨ things. Today is the official LMS Platform for all Uruguayan´s educational system.
With touch screen and Android came new opportunities that we capitalized for Kindergarten. From scratch we prepared the tablet to be educationally meaningful, age suitable and technically ready. The communication and capacity building strategy suited the audience and it was amazingly well received. The president Mr. José Mujica gave the 1st one, which represented the 1million device given by CEIBAL.
Platforms such as the Library or LMS CREA are now the backbone of other initiatives. Tournaments with XO have been integrated to foster other services such as robotics or the Math Platform PAM.
